The Kitchen Furniture Co Shaker range of dining tables, chairs and stools comprises a beautiful capsule collection of elegant and simple designs, which pay homage to the great Shaker traditions.
Shaker furniture is the name given to a particular style of furniture developed by the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, a religious sect founded by Jane and James Wardley. They moved to America from Manchester, England in 1774, led by Mother Ann Lee. They were known as the Shaking Quakers, or Shakers, because of their fondness for ecstatic movement and dancing during worship.
Shaker furniture is widely admired for its simplicity, quality, innovative joinery and functionality, and these founding principles of Shaker design have given inspiration to some of the finest designers of modern dining furniture, including the team here at The Kitchen Furniture Company. This beautiful range of complementary dining tables, chairs and stools will bring a sense of style and quality to any kitchen or dining room.
Those Shaker principles are very much in evidence throughout our collection, with our slat or “ladder” back dining chairs and woven seats all being influenced by the Shaker artisans. Your dining space will feel fresh and clean, yet remain supremely comfortable.
Many Shaker pieces were also originally painted or stained in order to protect the wood and also to make it more attractive, and our subtle palette draws on these influences to create a stunning collection of colour options available on all of our Shaker dining tables and chairs.
The first generation of Shaker furniture makers were converts who had previously worked in the outside world before joining the Shakers, and they refined their hallmark designs based on simplicity, eliminating veneers, inlays, and carving.
In their place they relied on beautiful, natural wood and effective, simple design, and you can see this approach reflected in every piece of The Kitchen Furniture Co.’s Shaker dining table set range. From clean lines to effective components, there is no wasted material or unnecessary fuss – just beautiful styles, lovingly made.
The original painted Shaker furniture makers had a saying that optimised their work ethic: “Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live and as if you were to die tomorrow”. This ensured that their furniture was made to the highest standards and lasted a lifetime. This resonates with The Kitchen Furniture Company as we share their approach to quality and craftsmanship, evident in the attention to detail of all our dining tables, chairs and stools.
